Georgian Three-Tone Gold Padlock Pendant
Georgian Three-Tone Gold Padlock Pendant
$1,250.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1810
This wonderful antique padlock was made in France at the height of Napoleon's First French Empire (circa 1810). It's crafted in 18 karat rose gold, with applied three-tone gold ornamentation to the front: rose gold flowers, green gold vine leaves, and a yellow gold background. The craftsmanship, as with much French jewellery of this period, is nothing short of exceptional. Made at time when France had established hegemony over the vast majority of mainland Europe (there's some link to padlock there, right?) An aside: the motto adopted by Napoleon during this period was "Liberté, Ordre Public" (liberty and public order), which seems like something of a step down from "liberté, égalité, fraternité", although given what had gone down in the preceding decades I can see why he changed it.
