DATE: Victorian, c.1890

This gorgeous Victorian butterfly brooch is set with an array of glistening gemstones throughout. Its body is set with dreamy natural pearls, demantoid garnets and sapphires, leading to the long gold antennae and ribbed detailed legs. Its wings are spread out wide, with silver openwork set with rose cut diamonds that lead to the ruby and sapphire gold set edges. Its backed it 15 karat gold, with detachable brooch fittings- this means you can wear this as a pendant too! Although this beautiful insect is thought of as "Psyche" - the soul, the butterfly is also believed to be a symbol of change. Their life cycle from a humble caterpillar to a chrysalis and finally a beautiful butterfly mirrors the journey of growth and transformation.
