Victorian Bog Oak "Cauldron" Stanhope Compass Charm
Victorian Bog Oak "Cauldron" Stanhope Compass Charm
$600.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
Stanhopes were invented by René Dagron in 1857 as a way of viewing microphotographs without the need of an expensive microscope. This one's set into a carved bog oak charm, charmingly fashioned as witches cauldron. The aesthetic is rustic and super spooky, and it stands on three legs with a silver handle. Peep into the side to see six photographs of "A Souvenir of Towyn", a seaside resort in the Conwy County Borough, Wales- College Green, A Corner of old Towyn, The Promenade, Dysynni River, Craig Aderyn & Rustic Bridge and Dolgoch. At the top of the cauldron is a compass, with a silver handle and jump ring, completing the piece. It dates from the Victorian period, circa 1880, and at the time, this little souvenir must have seemed at the cutting edge of optical technology... Extreme miniaturisation of the new photographic technique.
