DATE: Georgian, c.1780
A fantastic antique masquerade patch box pendant dating to the Georgian period, circa 1780. Its modelled as a masked lady, set with the most fine hand painted porcelain work. She wears a black mask, with two striking rose cut diamonds for eyes, with pink enamel blushed cheeks and lips, and finely detailed hair. The back features the hinged compartment of the patch box, and its decorated with gorgeous floral and scrolled engravings. Crafted in silver, it remains in lovely antique condition, complete with the original bail.
During the 18th century, patch boxes emerged as fashionable accessories. They were first designed to hold beauty patches made of silk or velvet, which eventually evolved into highly decorative pieces, reflecting wealth and social status.
