DATE: Georgian, c.1825
A fine antique double inkwell by silversmith, Robert Gainsford. He first came about in 1797 as a partner with Alexander Goodman and George Fairbairn in the firm of "Goodman & Co.", silver platers of Sheffield. Following the end of that partnership on 25 June 1808, he began to work on his own, Gainsford & Co., 90 Eyre Street, Sheffield. This lovely piece features Gainsford's makers marks, dating it to the year 1825.
This large double inkwell features a ornately decorated plate with floral and scroll motifs, that stands on four legs that presents two faceted crystal ink pots, each one topped with a silver lid with further and matching, English hallmarks.
