Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1850
A fantastic antique pietra dura panel... Pietra Dura- precisely cut hardstones with a carefully chosen colour palette which are arranged to form a pattern or image, typically set within a panel of marble or onyx, and then polished and buffed to a high shine. The stone inlay work is so finely crafted, that it often looks like a painting. This quality usually makes pietra dura more valuable than other mosaic work.
The main event of this piece depicts a couple (most likely European), linking arms and strolling by. The lady is wearing a layered garment with black buckle shoes, displaying colours of bright blue, pink, orange, cream and green. The gent wears a feathered hat, with a collared vest, trousers and boots. Each section has been gorgeously set using a different marbles/agate/hardstones creating fantastic colour combinations, skin tones, and even the little shiny part of the gents boot! Their faces a wonderfully detailed- even down to the their eyelashes and noses! It amazes me, the skill of the artisans who made quality examples like this, knowing they're comprised of cut stone inlays. It's not jewellery, but it is marvellous, and it dates from the Victorian period, circa 1850.
