Georgian "Cupid Escaping By Sea" Brooch
Georgian "Cupid Escaping By Sea" Brooch
$1,650.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1830
A remarkable Georgian brooch depicting "Eros Escaping by Sea by using his bow to propel a boat made from his quiver with an arrow as the mast and his blindfold as the sail". The subject is inspired by an early 16th century engraving by Italian artist Marco Dente, currently in the collection of the Met Museum, New York. I'd say the title more-or-less sums up what's going on. This brooch dates from the late Georgian period, circa 1830, crafted in 9 karat gold with the subject rendered on bone over black leather and protected behind a convex glass front.
