Victorian Eagle Intaglio Signet Ring FIDE AC DIFFIDE
Victorian Eagle Intaglio Signet Ring FIDE AC DIFFIDE
$1,350.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
A superb Victorian carnelian signet ring with heraldic intaglio crest and motto. The crest depicts an eagle's head, above a banner with the Latin FIDE AC DIFFIDE, or "Faith and Distrust" (although I'm a little unsure about the "ac"). The ring is a good size, and modelled in 18 karat gold, dating from circa 1880.
The crest and motto belongs Samual James Augustus Salter, as per the entry in Fairbairn: "Salter, Samuel James Augustus, Basingfield, Basingstoke, an eagle's head gu., Fide ac diffide." It's quite likely that this ring belonged to the man himself, who, in 1874, published a book titled "Dental Pathology and Surgery".
