Victorian 18k Gold Masonic Signet Ring
$4,500.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1870
The Square and Compasses are one of the most recognisable symbols of Freemasonry. They are architects tools, so there is obvious relevance there, but they also have symbolic meaning. As Duncan's Masonic Monitor of 1866 explains: "The square, to square our actions; The compasses, to circumscribe and keep us within bounds with all mankind". This ring, is crafted in 18k gold throughout and features scallop shell chased detailing to the shoulders. Dates from the Victorian period, circa 1870.
The scallop shells are a symbol from Knights Templar. The tessellated border symbolises the planets in their revolutions around the sun, reminding the Freemason that he will always be surrounded by providence as long as he continues to live uprightly and justly.
