$1,000.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1820
A cool Georgian cameo ring depicting John Milton. Milton was an English poet and intellectual who served as a civil servant in the Commonwealth of England under Oliver Cromwell. He's obviously best known for his epic poem Paradise lost, written at a time of unprecedented political and religious upheaval. Within his own lifetime he received international renown for championing freedom of speech, and freedom of the press; he has since been revered by such literary titans as Blake, Wordsworth, and Thomas Hardy.
Tragically, an in a bizarre parallel with Beethoven, Milton went blind mid-way through his career. Some say that these are the twin defining catastrophes of modern European art... however neither were stopped from completing (arguably) their two greatest masterpieces: Milton's Paradise Lost, and Beethoven's 9th Symphony. His sonnet “On His Blindness” (1655), if you don't know it, is quite wonderful, and well worth checking out.
