Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1820
This motif, known as a Witch's Heart was popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. It's said these curved and asymmetric hearts were originally worn in ancient times to protect against bad spirits or witches. In Scottish culture, this style of brooch is called the "Luckenbooth" heart and over time, their meaning has changed to "bewitched with love". Sometimes covered in gems, a single heart meant you were in a relationship and a double heart, married.
This brooch, a gorgeous Witch's Heart dating from the Georgian period, circa 1820. It's set with flat cut garnets with a lovely locket "crown" at the top to add your own photograph. Crafted in 15k gold throughout.
