Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1820
A charming emu brooch dating from the Georgian period, circa 1820. It's crafted in 15k gold and the cameo is carved from a single piece of hardstone agate, and the bird and foreground set in white over a reddish-brown background. Native to Australia, the emu is one of the few birds that the father incubates the eggs and goes on to raise the chicks. It's an important cultural symbol to the island nation, appearing frequently in Indigenous Australian mythology, as well as the modern coat of arms and various coins.
