18th Century Enamel Eagle & Snake Brooch
18th Century Enamel Eagle & Snake Brooch
$1,480.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1750
A remarkable little brooch dating from the mid 18th century, circa 1750. It's modelled as an eagle, carrying a serpent in it's mouth that's finely wrapped around it's feet. It set with fantastic enamel work, red on the wings and tail and green spotted on the body. It's crafted in rich 18k gold with great carved details to the eyes, beak and claws.
In some traditions, the eagle represents strength, courage, and freedom, while the serpent symbolizes transformation, healing, and wisdom. The encounter between the two creatures could be seen as a symbolic representation of a struggle or conflict, with the eagle triumphing over the serpent.
