Victorian Sea Bean "Touch Wood" Pendant
Victorian Sea Bean "Touch Wood" Pendant
$300.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c. 1900
Cool antique sea bean pendant designed to be worn as a touch wood. Sea beans (aka Drift Seeds) are a hard seed , fruit, or nut adapted for long journeys over water. Falling into the ocean in the Caribbean or mainland Americas, these exotic travellers would occasionally wash up on European shores causing wonder and amazement, and ultimately becoming associated with luck and good fortune - it is said that a coconut can survive afloat in the sea for 120 days, and still have the ability to germinate when it strikes land.
As for this little seed/nut, I have no idea what the origin plant was, but it allows you to, quite literally, touch (or knock on) wood to bring good fortune whenever necessary. Dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1900.
