Victorian Pierrot Enamel Love Token Pendant

$1,100.00

Description

DATE: Late Victorian, c.1900

An ace antique Pierrot love token pendant dating from the early 20th Century, circa 1910. It's French made, crafted in 18 karat gold and finished in vitreous green enamel. The words translate as "When this Pierrot will sing, my love will end" which is a sweet and playful romantic sentiment. Pierrot, if you're not familiar, is a stock character of pantomime and commedia dell'arte whose origins are in the late seventeenth-century Italian troupe of players performing in Paris and known as the Comédie-Italienne; the name is a diminutive of Pierre (Peter). He's portrayed as a sad clown, forever pining for the love of Columbine, who invariably breaks his heart.
