Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
Freemasonry describes itself as a "beautiful system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols". This cool masonic pendant dates from the late Victorian period, and features a range of symbols and icons. Two pillars stand to the centre- known to represent the two columns that flanked the entrance to King Solomon’s temple. The pillars are said to represent strength and establishment. Every Masonic lodge has representations of two pillars. Above, stands The Eye of Providence, a representation of the watchful care of the Supreme Architect and the chequerboard or mosaic floor, an old symbol of the order known to symbolise the evil and good of human life.
It's beautifully made with hand engraved details and great use of openwork, and its crafted in 9 karat gold throughout.
