Georgian White Paste Trefoil Drop Earrings
Georgian White Paste Trefoil Drop Earrings
$1,320.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1830
A gorgeous pair of Georgian white paste earrings dating from the first half of the 19th Century, circa 1830. Each earring is set with a chunky "cushion cut" paste gemstone drop, mounted in detailed silver foil backed settings - the foil and the silver both used to increase brilliance/brightness and accentuate their colour. These stones dangle freely from charming trefoil motifs, further set with white paste stones. They dangle around one inch from the ear and feature 15k yellow gold wires.
The earrings were made at a time when paste gems could command as much (if not more) than natural gemstones, on account of the technology being so new and that the stones would be completely clear and free from inclusions. Usually highly polished leaded glass, with minute amounts of certain metals added to give colour – the technique was perfected by Georges Frédéric Strass in 1724.
