Antique Steel Intaglio Signet Ring

$4,600.00

Description

DATE: WW1, c.1914

This cool antique signet ring is made from steel. It's a good size and weight, and dates from the the early 20th century, circa 1914. Iron and steel jewellery became very popular, when the Prussian royal family encouraged people to trade in their gold and silver jewellery to help fund the war effort (against Napoleon). They would receive iron jewellery in return and it became both fashionable and patriotic to wear such pieces. They often came with the inscription "Gold gab ich für Eisen" or "I gave gold for iron", however this ring, features an intaglio carving of a crest and is bordered by a ring of rose gold.
