Mourning jewellery has a rich and varied history that spans centuries, with each era introducing new styles and materials that changed attitudes towards death and grief. In the Victorian era, mourning jewellery became very popular, with Queen Victoria herself becoming a wearer of mourning jewellery after the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert. Victorian mourning jewellery was often made of black enamel and featured intricate designs.
This ring, an impressive early Victorian memorial signet ring with a great piece of history. It's set with a shield-shaped green chalcedony panel, and the shoulders feature intricate black enamelled foliate motifs. There's a dedication behind the head that reads: "Joseph Tiffetts, 22nd March 1843, age 61". With "In Memory Of" around the outer band. Crafted in 18k gold.
