Roman Garnet Intaglio Signet Ring "Winged Victory"
Roman Garnet Intaglio Signet Ring "Winged Victory"
$1,750.00
Description
DATE: Ancient Roman, 2nd century AD
Cool ancient Roman signet ring dating from the 2nd century AD (or thereabouts). It's set with a garnet gemstone intaglio depicting Victoria (aka Winged Victory or Nike from the Greek pantheon), the personified goddess of victory, often associated with Bellona (goddess of war). Unlike Nike, Victoria was a major part of Roman society, with many temples erected in her honour including one on the Palatine Hill which would house the spoils of war from Roman victories. She was, to the Romans, a symbol of victory over death, ultimately determining who would be successful during war. The ring is modelled in bronze, with simple crimped detailing around the outer head.
