Georgian "Three Cupids" Spinner Fob Pendant
Georgian "Three Cupids" Spinner Fob Pendant
$6,400.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1800
A fantastic antique spinner fob pendant dating from the Georgian period, circa 1800. The spinner features three oval hardstone agate panels, each intaglio carved with cupid (eros), the god of love and desire. Cupid is typically seen as a cherubic infant wielding a bow and arrow, however in the first carnelian panel, he is seen with lyre, serenading an owl, which is sat upon a small pedestal, possibly a reference to Athena and of course wisdom. "The greatest pleasure in life is love,” - Euripides. On the second white chalcedony panel he is seen serenading Psyche who's perched at the top of a cliff face in butterfly form. "Love conquers all," Virgil (Omnia Vincit Amor). And finally the the third, on a yellow chalcedony panel, Cupid is seen with butterfly wings and Psyche clutched to his chest. The paring of the soul and love symbolises the combination of spiritual and physical love. "Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies,"- Aristotle.
