Georgian Emerald & Old Cut Diamond Halley's Comet Charm
Georgian Emerald & Old Cut Diamond Halley's Comet Charm
$1,500.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1830
A gorgeous example of the Georgian Halley's Comet, modelled as a charm and set with old mine cut diamonds and a principal emerald. The cluster of diamonds rest in silver crimped settings, very typical of jewellery from this era, while the main event rests in gold, a gorgeous contrast to the vivid green quality emerald. The body of the charm in 15k yellow gold features pretty hand chased detail, and is set with a single old mine cut at the end.
Halley's Comet is named after the Royal Astronomer Sir Edmund Halley, who was the first to realize that reported comet sightings between 1531 and 1682 were actually of one single object, that orbited the sun roughly every 75 years. As such, he was able to predict, with remarkably accuracy, the year in which it would re-appear - 1759 - and when it did, they gave the comet his name. When Halley's comet was about to re-appear in 1835, people got really excited, and jewellery was made from excitement!
