Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1801
This amazing Georgian seal fob is dedicated to a Lord Adam Gordon, who died August 13th, 1801 aged 72. The base of this piece is set with chalcedony, intaglio carved with the Gordon family crest and the motto "Animo Non Astutia" translating to "By Courage, Not Cunning", well suited to this commander-in-chief of the forces in Scotland.
He was appointed this role in 1782, and also became a member of parliament for Kincardine, in Scotland. After marriage in 1761, war and parliament, he died at The Burn, Kincardineshire, a large estate that you can actually stay in today!
A memorial is engraved at the top of the base, which would have indeed been given to a loved one shortly after his passing, and its crafted in 15k gold throughout.
