18th Century SOUVENIR Navette Memorial Pendant
18th Century SOUVENIR Navette Memorial Pendant
$2,100.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1780
An incredible Georgian memorial pendant dating from the late 18th Century. The navette-shaped design features intricately set seed pearls mounted on a royal blue guilliché enamel backdrop and arranged around the word SOUVENIR - which translates from French as memory, or remember - all within an enamelled border. The seed pearls in the upper half are arranged in the form of ribbons, artfully draped over the word, and in the lower half they form crossed laurel branches.
The piece will likely have been given out a funeral, to a close friend or relative, to commemorate the life of the deceased. The use of white enamel (as opposed to the more usual black) in the border represents purity and innocence.
