Antique Japanese Silver Theatre Mask Charms
Antique Japanese Silver Theatre Mask Charms
$625.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1900
These two fantastic silver Noh charms date from the late Victorian period, circa 1900. Noh theatre has strong roots in the Shinto tradition (Japan's native belief system) and was also influenced by the Buddhist tradition. The classic musical drama is based on tales from traditional literature performed since the 14th century. In the story, a supernatural creature transforms into human form and tells the story. The actors tell a story through their masks and gestures and props.
The first mask, to me looks like Okina, a mask made to look like an old man! To the back, it features a little hidden compartment. The other charm is double sided with a young smiling female- Okame and on the reverse, O-Beshimi. This mask is worn to represent powerful deities and demons, quite the contrast to the reverse!
They remain in great condition and each feature a jump ring for the addition to a chain or charm bracelet.
