Victorian Bavarian Charivari Elk Tooth Hunting Amulet

Victorian Bavarian Charivari Elk Tooth Hunting Amulet

$950.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1870

Pronounced "schariwari", these antique talismans comes from the Latin caribaria, which translates as "madness" or "pandemonium"; they were prized and worn by hunters originally to bring good fortune, and later as status symbols. This is something of an unusual example with the three elk teeth mounted in 9k gold with ornate floral engraving and a 3D flower at the centre - they were more commonly fashioned in silver.
