Victorian Miser's Purse Charm
Victorian Miser's Purse Charm
$800.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1860
An unusual Georgian Miser's Purse charm crafted in 18k gold. The main body is composed of interlinked gold hoops, with a hinged top section that opens to grant access. While there's not enough room inside for actual coins, it's perfectly sized to hold something sentimental to you. The charm is suspended on a short length of chain topped with a small jump ring for easy addition to a necklace, charm holder, or bracelet or even a key chain.
Miser purses were popular in England and France during the mid 18th century through to the early years of the 20th century. They were used to keep coins safe inside, meaning that it was hard to get the coins out in a hurry - hence the name miser.
