Description
DATE: Art Deco, c.1930
This incredible 18k gold St. Christopher was made in the 1930s by Raymond Tschudin. The reverse is adorned with a wonderful scene featuring the main modes of modern long distance transport available in the 1930s: an automobile, steam train, aeroplane, and in the distance a zeppelin (!!) Each of the four vehicles was at the cutting edge of their respective branches of technology, and superbly epitomised the progress of Modernity.
The front is adorned with an intricately detailed depiction of Christopher wading through the river with Jesus on his shoulder, along with the words "Regarde St Christophe puis va-t'en rassuré" which translates as "Look at St. Christopher then go on reassured".
Raymond Tschudin studied at the National School of Fine Arts under Henri Dropsy. He won the 1945 Grand Prix of Rome in medal engraving, and became a resident of the Villa Medici in Rome from 1946 to 1949.
