Vintage Gold "Hickory Dickory Dock" Charm
Vintage Gold "Hickory Dickory Dock" Charm
$550.00
Description
DATE: Vintage, c.1960
Cute vintage charm dating from the 1960s styled as a grandfather clock with little mouse that climbs up the side... as in the Hickory Dickory Dock nursery rhyme. It's one of the better known English-language nursery rhymes, the earliest known version appearing in Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book, published in 1744 (London). The origins and meanings are unclear, with some positing it was on old counting-out rhyme based on Cumbric numbers Hevera (8), Devera (9), and Dick (10), while others believe it was based on the astronomical clock at Exeter Cathedral which had a small hole in the door below the face for the resident cat to hunt mice.
Either way, it's survived the test of time, with literally hundreds of versions available on Spotify (I feel like I've probably heard every single one over the past couple years...). The charm's crafted in 9 karat gold with London hallmarks from the year 1966. The pendulum and mouse both able to move freely.
