Victorian South Africa Gold Digger Brooch
$1,550.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
A cool and collectable South African goldrush brooch, dating from the 1880s. It depicts a shovel and a pick, with ropework tying it all together. It also features a miniature gold nugget on the end of the shovel with SOUTH AFRICA and scroll details.
These brooches were produced during the great gold rushes of the late 19th century in South Africa, Australia and USA. They were mostly made in Birmingham, then shipped out to the gold-mining areas. Gold miners liked to show off their new-found wealth, and one of these brooches for a wife or girl-friend was a must. Who couldn't use a bit more love and wealth in life?
