Victorian Diamond "Lucky Bean" Charm

Victorian Diamond "Lucky Bean" Charm

$1,850.00

Description

DATE: Late Victorian, c.1890

Adorable antique "Lucky Bean" pendant dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1890. It's crafted in wonderfully patina'd 18 karat gold, and set with a single old European cut diamond. Lucky beans were popular throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras, allegedly inspired by the "sea beans" that would occasionally wash up on European beaches after travelling on Ocean currents from far more exotic lands. The fact they could still germinate after (potentially) many years at sea suggested that they must be infused with powerful good luck... and it's even said that these mysterious seafaring seeds inspired Christopher Columbus to set off in search of strange new worlds (for better or for worse...).
