DATE: Victorian, c.1880

For centuries, the salamander been a symbol of immortality and rebirth and was thought to be able to withstand burning in flames, and so was perceived to be a magical creature. A superb Victorian salamander brooch, it's body set with gorgeous demantoid garnets and stripe of old cut diamonds down the centre of it's back. With ruby eyes, a slightly open mouth, and splayed toes, it's a stunning piece. Crafted in 15 karat gold and dates from the Victorian period, circa 1880.
