Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1830
Most people are familiar with Victorian mourning with it's strict rules, however mourning in the Georgian era also had rules. Grief is automatically triggered by loss and mourning, in its most pure form, is a period of transition for a loved one to understand the loss and accept the memory of a person. Stages of mourning in fashion and identity were separated into deepest mourning, ordinary and half stage. Each of these stages required different colours and materials to be worn for acceptance in society.
Soft mauves, violet, lilac and so on, were acceptable in half mourning. This ring, a gorgeous cluster set with an amethyst cabochon stone. It's quite highly domed and reflects deep and light purples when moved in the light. Sparkly old cut diamonds surround the cabochon, with silver settings. The head is closed backed and the band is crafted in 15k gold. Dates from the Georgian period, circa 1830.
