$1,500.00
Description
DATE: Georgian Regency, c.1815
Remarkable shell cameo earrings dating from the English Regency Period, circa 1815. The subjects are Bertel Thorvaldsen's Day and Night after his famous marble reliefs, and they're set in wonderfully intricate cannetille and oak leaf earring mounts. The pair, as opposites, represent the two halves of a day, together making a whole. Night hangs in the sky, eyes closed, with children in her embrace and poppies (long known for their sleep-inducing properties in her hair. An owl flies behind her. Day is personified flying quickly across the sky with a torch-bearing child clinging to her back. She scatters roses is her wake. The earrings are crafted in 15 karat gold, and remain in great condition given their age and construction. The cameos are each signed Dolcine.
