Georgian Silhouette Rose Cut Diamond Ring
Georgian Silhouette Rose Cut Diamond Ring
$3,000.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1780
A stunning quality Georgian ring, featuring a hand painted silhouette miniature, surrounded by rose cut diamonds. In England, this was originally called "shadows" or "profile shades", and in France, it was named after the French finance minister, Etienne de Silhouette, under ruling of Louis XV. According to many, he was a cheapskate, and when he left his government position he retired to a little farmhouse, where he decorated it with black home-made paper cuttings. Later it was also used in glyptography, especially cameos. This style was very popular during the neoclassical era from 1750 onwards.
This silhouette shows a long haired gentleman, with a lace ruff. He's surrounded by a halo of rose cut diamonds, and its mounted in silver with a 15 karat gold band. A really cool ring, dating from the Georgian period, circa 1780.
