DATE: Georgian, c.1750

A fantastic miniature Georgian charm in the shape of a purse. It's crafted in 18k gold and opens to reveal a small locket compartment. Both the front and the back is finished in fine enamel work, with a portrait on one side and flowers on the other. French, circa 1750. 

Antique jewellery often includes floral motifs, as part of their "Language of Flowers", whereby each flower or plant represented some romantic or emotional sentiment... In this case, forget-me-nots for True Love and roses (rosemary rose) for remembrance. The locket here possibly represents the loss of a loved one.
