Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1820
Cool Australian emu brooch dating from the early 19th century, circa 1820. The cameo is carved from a single piece of hardstone agate, the bird and foreground rendered in white over a reddish-brown background. Native to Australia, the emu is one of the few birds that the father incubates the eggs and goes on to raise the chicks. It's an important cultural symbol to the island nation, appearing frequently in Indigenous Australian mythology, as well as the modern coat of arms and various coins.
