DATE: Art Deco/Egyptian Revival, c.1920
The Egyptian Revival era of jewellery took place during the Art Deco period, when Tutankhamun's Tomb was discovered. This piece, a charming Egyptian Revival sarcophagus and mummy charm crafted in 9k gold. The front is finished in fine blue and green enamel detailing and hieroglyphics. The hieroglyphics typically included their name and title, and were usually decorated beautifully. The line of hieroglyphics which run vertically down the back represent the backbone of the deceased, and was thought to provide strength to the mummy in rising to eat and drink.
It's hinged down one side and opens to reveal a gold mummy, which can be taken out. Dates from the Art Deco period, circa 1920.
