DATE: Victorian, c.1860

An incredible mid Victorian crucifix pendant with inscription "INRI" to the reverse. INRI represents the Latin inscription: IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDÆORVM, or "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews" (John 19:19). John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages – Hebrew, Latin and Greek – and was put on the cross of Jesus. To the front, the Christ figure is rendered in 3D, finely detailed in contrast with the matte, wooden cross. It's crafted in silver throughout and dates from the Victorian period, circa 1860.
