WW2 Bakelite Prison Ring
WW2 Bakelite Prison Ring
$400.00
Description
DATE: WW2
During World War II, prisoners of war had limited resources, and creative outlets were scarce... However this only brought on more creativity! Pieces were made from materials such as Bakelite, commonly used at the time. People would fashion these by carving, shaping, and polishing the plastic into rings that could be worn as jewellery or traded with other prisoners or guards. While the conditions varied greatly, crafting items like these rings provided a creative outlet and a way to pass the time. These pieces would feature a small photo of a loved one encapsulated within the plastic.
This piece has been carefully carved from Bakelite, and set with a tiny photograph of what looks to be like husband and wife- set within a black border. It remains in great condition considering its age and use, and it was made to fit a size 8.75 finger. I wonder who these people were, their names, relationships, family? I guess that's the beauty of it.
