DATE: Art Deco, c.1930

Dating to the 1930's, here we have a fantastic tubogas necklace... Tubogas translates literally to “gas pipe” and is the name given to a type of chain formed from a pair of interlocking gold strips wrapped tightly together. This forms a flexible and hollow tubular chain that requires no soldering, and it was super popular during the second world war due to the scarcity of metals. This technique was used in Van Cleef & Arpels in their "Passe-Patout" collection in 1939, and this piece is modelled in 14k gold throughout. It has a wearable length of 14.5 inches, finished with Victorian inspired details to the centre where the two ends of the necklace meet- creating a gorgeous crossover effect.
