A gorgeous antique rivière necklace set with 25 turquoise paste gemstones. The oval-faceted stones are set in closed foil backed settings, they're uniform in size and display the most beautiful vivid colour. It's crafted in silver throughout with a hook and eye clasp, and it dates from the Victorian period, circa 1860. 17 inches wearable length.
Paste gemstones were popular throughout the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras. It is a special type of flint glass that emulates a number of gemstones. The origins of Paste jewellery date back to the mid-18th century, to a jeweller named Georges Frederic Stras, who worked as a jeweller to the king when he moved from Strasbourg to Paris in 1724.
