Victorian Niello Silver Propelling Pencil Pendant
$500.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1890
This charming Victorian propelling pencil is encased in lovely Niello silver and rosey gold gilt metal. The pencil is moved in and out by moving the rosey gold band along the Niello case, and it features a small jump ring for wear on a chain- so you have something to jot your notes down with to hand!
Niello is an ancient technique, similar to enamelling, but using a black mixture of powdered silver, copper, lead, and sulphur. This powder, or paste, is applied to the base metal (usually silver), fired until it melts, then left to set as it cools. There’s evidence of the technique being used as far back as the Bronze Age!
