Edwardian Lucky Chimney Sweep Pendant & Chain
$1,000.00
Description
DATE: Edwardian, c.1903
In the UK, chimney sweeps have been considered lucky for hundreds of years, and in some places, it’s still believed that they carry luck today. Just like you see in the movies (Mary Poppins for example ;) ), chimney sweeps balanced and danced on the rooftops and dangled down the chimneys, yet still lived to tell the tale! A chimney sweep also saved the life of King George II by stopping his runaway horse and carriage! There are many different tales on how the chimney sweep became lucky... And in this piece depicts, you guessed it, a chimney sweep. He's finely enamelled in black, with a ladder and brush and the back features a name and date engraving of "Ernst, 30 VII (July), 1903". Most liely given as a lucky token. It's crafted in silver throughout, and comes complete with a silver chain- 16.7 inches wearable length.
