Jules Roger Sauer, French born from Alsace-Loraine, immigrated to Brazil alone in 1939 after fleeing Nazi Europe. At just 18 years of age he could speak four languages, however Portuguese was not among those he knew. After years of working in the country that welcomed him, he managed to start his own business in 1941, "Lapidação Amsterdam". His future wife, Zilda, was originally his partner that helped him develop a love and appreciation for precious gemstones.
His most famous work and greatest discovery, the largest rough Aquamarine ever found in history, distinguished by it's purity and colour. It weighed approximately 74.5 pounds!!! and decided to name it “Martha Rocha” as a tribute to the Brazilian beauty queen with the captivating clear blue eyes. The list goes on to what Sauer discovered, such as the recognition of the Brazilian Emerald, the worlds largest Alexandrite which weighed 122,400 carats and later went into the Guinness World Records.
This piece, a fantastic sample box for the Amsterdam Gem Cutting Company AKA Lapidação Amsterdam. It features nine different loose gemstones: Aquamarine, Amethyst, Garnet, Citrine, Tourmaline and glass with a diamond like appearance. The inside lid shows two points of contact, Rio and S.Paulo and their offers. I imagine these stones were shown to the trade or a customer, to then be made into jewellery. The box remains in great condition and the stones too.
