$450.00
Description
DATE: Art Deco, c.1916
Niello signet ring commemorating the siege of Kut-Al-Amara that took place in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) from the 7th December 1915 to the 29th April 1916. An 8000-strong British garrison stationed in the town of Kut, around 100 miles south of Baghdad, was besieged by the Ottoman 6th army. It was said, by historian Christopher Catherwood, to be "the worst defeat of the Allies in World War 1", with 23,000 dead or wounded on the British side and 13,164 captured, including six generals. Many of the siege survivors were imprisoned at Aleppo, during which many more died. Ten months later, the British Indian Army, made up almost entirely of new recruits, conquered Baghdad and re-took Kut from the Ottomans. The ring has a scene - presumably depicting the British Headquarters in Kut - on the face, palm trees and a sailing boat on the shoulders, and AMARA 1916 on the outer band.
