Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travellers, and often depicted on pendants or charms to ensure the wearer a safe and speedy journey. He is also the patron saint of: athletics, bachelors, sailors, storms, surfing, epilepsy, Havana, gardeners, and toothache (apparently). This pendant is crafted in 9 karat gold with clear English hallmarks dating it to 1984.

According to the legend, Christopher was a Canaanite who initially went by the name of Reprobus. Tired of serving the king of Canaan, he decided to seek out and serve "the greatest king there was", eventually learning of the Christian faith he decided to search for Christ himself. Seemingly unable to serve Christ through fasting and prayer it was suggested that, on account of his great size and strength, he should assist people in crossing a dangerous river where they had been perishing in the attempt. After Christopher had performed this service for some time, a small child arrived at the river and asked for his help to cross. Half way across, the child had become so heavy, and the river so swollen, that Christopher was barely able to find the strength to continue. In the end he did, and upon making it to the other side he said to the child: "You have put me in the greatest danger. I do not think the whole world could have been as heavy on my shoulders as you were." The child confirmed: "You had on your shoulders not only the whole world but Him who made it. I am Christ your king, whom you are serving by this work." Later, Christopher visited Lycia where he converted thousands to Christianity before he was eventually beheaded by the Lycian king.
