Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1882
A gorgeous Victorian locket with a finely enamelled red and yellow butterfly. To the back, "May 4th 1882". The butterfly is said to represent the soul, but the Victorians also believed that upon death, the soul would escape the body and simply fly away. The final phase of the butterfly’s life, the last journey of one’s immortal soul. This may have been made as a piece of mourning jewellery, for someone who had lost a loved one.
It's hinged down the side and opens to reveal two locket compartments. Hangs on a silver chain, with a wearable length of 21 inches.
