Victorian Signet Ring with Roman She-Wolf Intaglio
Victorian Signet Ring with Roman She-Wolf Intaglio
$2,000.00
Description
DATE: Ring, Victorian 1888 - Intaglio, Roman 1st Century AD
An incredible antique signet ring set with an ancient Roman intaglio depicting the famous She-Wolf of Roman legend, suckling the infant twin brothers Romulus and Remus. The intaglio is carved into a domed carnelian cabochon which dates from the 1st Century AD - it's been set into a 15k gold Victorian ring mount, with simple deep chased shoulder detailing and English hallmarks dating it to the year 1888.
It's not unusual to find these ancient intaglios mounted into 19th Century rings, but this example is particularly appealing on account of the evocative subject and the elegance of the mount.
