Victorian Rose Gold Masonic Orb Pendant
Victorian Rose Gold Masonic Orb Pendant
$1,000.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1890
This cool antique masonic orb pendant is modelled in 9k rose gold with silver gilded innards. It dates to the Victorian period, circa 1890 and the frame holding the orb in place has individually hinged arms, which is a clue to its age... more recent examples feature a rigid "cage" to keep the ball together. It opens to reveal six pyramids arranged as a cross, each face hand-carved with a different masonic symbol: the Eye of Provenance, a compass, the moon, a skull and cross bones and so on.
The Masonic Orb's spherical shape was often interpreted as a representation of the universe, while the cross symbolizes the the four cardinal points- Fortitude, Prudence, Temperance, and Justice. The opening of the Orb for sphere to cross symbolises the transformation and journey of the individual, as they gain spiritual and moral knowledge. These unusual pieces would have been used as a nondescript pocket watch fob, hiding the masonic symbolism from sight. However another mason would presumably instantly recognise what it was.
